Ian F. Darwin:
Java and UNIX/Security Consulting

Paying the Bills... 2008-11-22 12:28

I have over three decades of experience in Software Development. For the last decade or so I've been specialising in:

Put all this experience to work for you - and help fund this informative web site: Drop me a line!

About Ian Darwin

I have used UNIX for over twenty-five years, and am a fan of UNIX, Java and Python technologies; before that I did a lot of C programming. I write about and teach these technologies; my magnum opus is The Java Cookbook, a very useful resource for any Java developer. More recently (Summer, 2007) O'Reilly released my Checking Java Programs with Open Source Tools, focusing on PMD, FindBugs, and Pathfinder. I'm also known for Tomcat: The Definitive Guide, the first edition of which I co-wrote with Jason Brittain. TomTDG provides a detailed look at installing, running and managing web sites with Tomcat. In November, 2007, Jason finished preparing the second edition, and it's even bigger and better than the first!

I offer UNIX, Java, Security and Web consulting. I use UNIX both for my servers and for my desktop; KDE and Gnome on OpenBSD, and Mac OS X make UNIX as user-friendly as that monopolistic operating system, and UNIX is already more functional, mature, secure, and reliable.

I've been developing software since before there was a system called UNIX, let alone a Macintosh or a Microsoft. And I've been active almost that long in the free software community. To round out the web site, I offer a sampling of free software and information for Open Systems.
